First, let me explain why I rated this show with only one star. I actually think "Firefly" is the greatest TV masterpiece of our time and I wanted to give it more then 10 stars, so I gave 11. On the other hand, watching this series made me very, very upset. And the reason for me being so angry with "Firefly" is that I won't see more than 15 episodes of it. "Serenity" the movie is not the same. And I really angry on Joss Whedon for not fighting for this show, not struggling enough to continue this phenomena, whatever it takes. So for this lack of the effort he deserves only one star.The first time I've encountered Joss Whedon was with 'Toy Story' back in 90's. I think I've made some sort of a record when I watched this movie 10 times in only two days. I was not aware that he was the screenwriter but I found soon enough when "Buffy" opened my eyes. Watching "Buffy" was an "out of the body" experience, I really doubted that Whedon will mange to create something so good again. "Angel" didn't interest me too much, and I've only heard about "Firefly" just before the "Serenity" hit the big screen. So my expectations were low and first episodes didn't prove me the opposite. Imagine my surprise when somewhere on the 7th episode I realized that I am participating in historic event, that I am observing the first and the only TV show that succeeded not only to create the most realistic sci-fi ever, but also to recreate in live action the wonderful experience of Japanese Anime series. The show is not exposing everything at one time, but slowly revealing pieces of the puzzle along the way, adding even more aspects and layers. So the impression from the show can be only constructed through time. The effect is gathered, not delivered. I saw all episodes, and then I saw them again just to see if this holds second viewing. I got to say, each following episode is better then previous one, each following viewing helps understand more. And I wonder how much higher "Firefly" would have gone, what kind of effect I could've get from it after seeing, say… 100 episodes?Whedon brings to it all his knowledge and ability of storytelling and writing, and I know more people were involved in this creation, but something tells me that he was the man with the last word and the biggest influence.I don't want to start and list all the brilliance of this show; anybody with eyes can see them. I'll just say that the production design is awesome, dialogs are sharp and witty, visual effects are stunning, characters are colorful and imaginative, the Diegestic world is rich and complex - the reality of the series has many social, cultural and philosophical layers, the terms "bad" and "good" are flexible, and of course the women in the show are still favorite subject for Whedon. Personally I think the depiction of female characters here is revolutionary for any TV show or Cinematic film, straight from Laura Mulvey's theory. And this is so excellent. And the story … well, fantasy and imagination were never a problem for Whedon, so the levels of entertainment are incredibly high.Too bad some network executive jerk woke up some morning and asked himself: "what can I do to make large group of people mad, frustrated and miserable? Oh yes, lets cancel the most brilliant show in the last decade!" And where does it leave us, the fans? I can only comfort myself with endless reviewing of each episode, thanking Joss Whedon for this joy, and crying silently at night while cursing everyone responsible for this shameful situation. Well … here I am.

A while ago, I saw a great series in which an eccentric traveller would go from place to place, carrying companions and working through varying problems of both a cosmic and a human nature. This is not it. What Firefly attempts to add to Doctor Who, it borrows from video games like Privateer, and it uses those elements poorly. Okay, so maybe I have a case of sour grapes because of the attitude exhibited by its creator, but what I see in Firefly is another reason why television is considered the great intellectual wasteland. Creator Joss Whedon has done nothing but whine about its treatment by the network, and maybe there is some merit to this. Constantly changing the timeslot does a show no favours, although there is a saying in writing. Put simply, one has to hook their audience as quickly and thoroughly as they possibly can. Details like the characters' backgrounds have to be filled in as time goes on. You can see a good example of this in the original radio series of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy, where the opening becomes so absurd that one cannot look away after ten minutes.Therein lies the essential problem with Firefly. Introducing and developing a singular character, the most compelling one, would have kept the audience tuned in, but instead we are given a literally skin-deep exploration of more than half a dozen characters, each less interesting than the last. An even bigger problem during the series is that each has so little variation in personality from moment to moment that it becomes possible to predict exactly what they are about to say before they say it. One can guess that Inara will argue with Captain Mal, Doctor Simon will protest, River will speak in cryptic rhymes, Jayne will be offensive, and one will fail to give a damn about the others. In the case of at least ten episodes, this generalisation will tell you everything you need to know about the plot. The frustrating thing is that the most compelling characters in the story, River and Simon, are given less than half as much exploration compared to what they deserve.There is also a saying in storytelling that goes something like a protagonist is only as effective as his antagonist. During Firefly, we are treated to visions of life under some kind of totalitarian government that lords it all over the citizenry. Meanwhile, our heroes wander around the fringes with what appears to be no society at all. In an era where mainstream society is utterly ignoring me and my alikes, we are not sitting around whinging to ourselves and looking for aid from a government that could apparently not care less about us. We are organising among ourselves to get our voices heard. Sure, opening lines of communication between planets would be quite a logistical problem, as would be organising resources between one another, but anyone vaguely familiar with the history of Western society will tell you that neglect of the worker is what gave birth to the union movement. People do not just sit there and take it when their needs are not being met for an extended time, yet this is the exact impression Firefly constantly gives.Writing aside, the series relies a lot upon the performances of its actors, and this is really its saving grace. Although the descriptions of what the tyrants do to her character carry no internal consistency, Summer Glau portrays the externally visible effects with aplomb. Speaking as someone who was held by a government-sponsored place and clandestinely abused for years just to see how much I could take, I truly bought Glau in the role of a woman in the same boat. Hence my frustration with the manner in which her character seems to just freeze in stasis whenever the rest of the cast gets their turn. Also grating is the repetition of the routine, with Summer being asked to repeat the same behaviours over and over throughout the handful of recorded episodes. Okay, we get it, River is suffering major trauma, let us explore the real meat of the matter in how she deals with it. Stagnation is hell enough in real life, Joss, I do not have any wish to pay to see it presented on the screen.You can whine at me to your heart's content that Firefly was screwed by its network and that fans fought tooth and nail to keep it on the air. Joss' belief that a conspiracy exists against him came crashing down when Serenity, a film that seemed to require viewing of the series as a prerequisite to understanding, failed to make back its budget. Big deal, I hear you say, films costing hundreds of millions of dollars fail to make back their budget all the time. Well, Serenity was filmed on a mere fraction of what was considered the expected norm in 2005. Two years earlier, George Lucas presented a film that cost him a hundred and thirteen million dollars to make. At the end of the run, it had made more than three times this amount, and that's just domestic. Don't tell me about how the gross is split, though, because Serenity cost a little more than a third of this amount, yet still has yet to make a profit. Fan petitions and conspiracy theories might make echoes in Hollywood, but a loss of at least ten million dollars will always drown it out.For these reasons, I gave Firefly, the TV series, a three out of ten. I sincerely hope Summer Glau gets to act in something better. If Doctor Who ever goes back to the multi-part, involved story arc approach that made it Doctor Who, she would fit right in. Firefly, by comparison, is pure wannabe.

There is one big premise that you have to swallow in order to like this show. If you can't cope with it, you won't like it, because it will smack you in the face in every episode.It is like the James Bond movies, if you don't accept, as a premise, that Bond, James Bond, can do everything, fly, drive, shoot, use *every* piece of machinery on the planet, that he can shoot better than all his adversaries (who all miss, all the time) and gets *all* the babes, if you don't accept this, you have to hate James Bond movies, because they are ridiculous. We talk about suspense of disbelief.The one thing you have to swallow, without thinking about it, is, that in this particular science fiction universe, the future looks like this:You have core planets, which are like one would imagine future worlds: Big, beautiful buildings, hight tech gadgets, spaceships and shuttles, modern weapons (some that don't kill by using some kind of sonic boom), flat displays, a modern, digital credit system instead of localised currency, a totally diverse people influenced by every imaginable culture, heavily influenced by the chinese society, the only remaining superpower besides the USA and so forth.But, and this is a capitalized BUT: There are also the outer rim planets. They don't have a developed infrastructure and such. Settlers are dumped on planets with next to nothing, exploited to recover raw materials, used as cheap labor, trying to survive. Still sounds reasonable, no? The catch is: all these outer rim worlds look like you have been thrown into a cheap spaghetti WESTERN movie.They trade cows, they use old revolvers, drive horses and dress in western-style garments. You have little, old, dirty small villages with a saloon and stuff. These outer rim planets, out of reach of the civilised Alliance, are a no-mans-land, with superstitious, uneducated fools, where the strong fist rules - if you have the most men and guns behind you, you are the law. The poor grunt is like the cowboy in a typical western movie.Hard to accept? Partially yes, of course. But there is logic in almost everything: there are future references everywhere! Real food (as opposed to synthesized proteins) is a rare commodity, the RICH guys have laser guns or state of the art display devices.And - they stay true to this premise throughout the show, which is a rare thing in today's entertainment.But apart from this (for some) hard to accept premise, this show is the most entertaining, clever, realistic(!), funny, imaginative, creative, thrilling piece of entertainment I had the pleasure of viewing (by downloading it from the internet) in years (don't get me wrong: I downloaded it because I live in Germany and the show was never aired here, and I asked my brother, who lives in the USA, to get me the DVD as a christmas present - and he did)As for realism: Why do they still use guns to kill people, why not lasers like in Star Trek (which i am avid fan of)? I say: guns kill people, bullets are cheap. Guns get the killing done. (And there are modern (bullet) guns and lasers in the show, they exist, they are simply not widespread and only available to the rich.No sound in space - a little thing with big impact. Not only is it realistic, but it adds to the atmosphere. Instead of ridiculous sound effects the scenes in space are underlaid with vivid music, only emphasising the vastness and nothingness of space.The basics of the universe comply with our world. In the outer rim, where modern civilization hasn't gotten a foothold yet, things - which are to us - common, are valuable merchandise! Just imagine the third world... How much worth are medicine, guns, food there? There are (to us) barbaric customs in uncivilised areas of the world and all this is being portrayed in the show.The Plots are great, not like in Enterprise where you seem to have seen everything somewhere before, these plots are unique, thrilling and exciting. I have seen episodes where I thought "ok, I get it" and then *wham* the story turns into a totally different direction. Surprises at every corner.The show is so refreshingly politically incorrect, I don't want to give away plot details, but there are situations you know from your movie/series experience and think OMG there we go again (Hostage situations someone?) and then*boom* - the protagonist does EXACTLY what WE would wish to do but which every movie/series is afraid of doing because it is not PC.The characters are three dimensional and so well laid out. This "family" on board a little spaceship, a confined space(!), with all their motivations, quirks and problems, trying to get along and achieve their goals, are so believable and make for a hell of a ride.The creators of this show have, in the first 14 episodes, established plots, characters and atmosphere that other science fiction series have only managed to achieve - if ever - in the last seasons of their time on air.Such a pity that most American viewers couldn't see behind a bold, unique, hilarious - if difficult to accept at first glance - premise... and see the beautiful gem of a show behind it.

As with BtVS, the world is divided into people who get Firefly and people who don't. In this series Joss Whedon created one of the most realistic post-war visions of the future ever committed to tape, that at the same time spoke about yesterday and today. Maybe a little too much today for its own good.The series is anti-corporate, anti-government and, while it takes the stand that some things are worth fighting for, it is largely anti-war. No wonder FOX did everything in its power to kill it off, including airing episodes out of order, skipping weeks after airing only three eps and, inevitably canceling the show without even airing episodes 12, 13 and 14 (out of 15). This was particularly damaging, as Firefly had a greater sense of ongoing plot than any other Whedon series in its first year. Viewers were left wondering, on more than one occasion, when a character would reference something we hadn't seen yet.The backstage dramatics aside, Firefly is intelligent and, like Buffy, mythic - except this time Whedon is dealing with the myth of America: the Frontier, the Civil War, the rise of the Corporation, etc . . . Firefly is a demanding show. It asks its audience to appreciate the shades of grey in its characters' moral scale. The villains are not comfortingly dressed as an alien race. In 500 years mankind will still be its own worst enemy. Technology will be in the hands of a privileged few, and others will in "The Black" - Whedon's frontier third world - where it is possible to exist without the interference (or benefit) of civilization and government. Things will be dirty, and used. Firefly creates a universe that almost totally opposes that of (that bastion of television sci-fi) Star Trek: its Federation-like central power (the Alliance) is interpreted as being oppressive and dystopic. We are on the side of those who resisted (like the Maqui) and lost.The acting is strong, the writing as excellent, funny and moving as on any Whedon show, and the effects and sets create a consistent, believable world. It is a shame the series didn't have a more hospitable environment in which to grow and become all it could have been.

Saddens me to think what could of been. So easily could of been a run of 10 years if shown at the right hour in the first place! Still binge watch the 14 episodes once or twice a year, and still think one of the top sci-fi series created, even though short lived.

One of the best shows that never got made, Firefly was one of Joss Whedon's most inspired works. Nathan Fillion along with the terrific cast made this show an absolutely enthralling experience.
